Trail of destruction in Lebanon's 'ghost towns' - as daily explosions fuel fears of escalating war
Sunday, 21 April 2024 The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon has told Sky News the dangers in the region have not gone away and called for calm, wisdom and de-escalation as a matter of urgency.
Hezbollah carried out its deepest strike in Israel by targeting the Israeli Air Force's Sky Dew base near Golani Junction, about 35 kilometres from the Lebanon border. The Sky Dew, Israelβs largest spy balloon, acts as a detection radar for unmanned aircraft and missiles. Two explosive-laden Hezbollah drones were launched in the attack, with one being downed by air defenses and the other successfully hitting the facility. The extent of the damage to the balloon is still being assessed by the Israeli military. This attack is seen as a retaliation for recent Israeli strikes on southern Lebanese villages and civilian homes. Hezbollah has vowed to continue its operations as long as Israel's military campaign in Gaza persists.

The recent meeting between Hassan Nasrallah of Hezbollah and Khalil al-Hayya of Hamas, reported by Al Mayadeen news, focused on Gaza developments, ceasefire talks, and broader regional issues. The encounter emphasised solidarity within the Iran-aligned "axis of resistance" against Israel. Escalating tensions include Hezbollah's attacks on northern Israel and Israel's warnings of military action in southern Lebanon. A senior Hezbollah commander's death led to rocket strikes on Israel, intensifying the conflict, with both sides employing advanced weaponry. The situation remains precarious along the Israel-Lebanon border.

The Iraqi resistance group has intensified its attacks on Israeli targets, employing suicide drones to target military installations in Umm al-Rashrash and Eilat's port. This marks the first use of Al-Arfad suicide drones in operations against Israeli and U.S. forces. Additionally, the group conducted operations against Israeli army sites along the Lebanese-Palestinian border, targeting Ma'ale Golani barracks and the Al-Samaqa site in the eastern sector, as well as buildings used by Israeli soldiers in Al-Malikiya and Avivim settlements in the western sector. The group has claimed responsibility for these attacks, sharing footage of their execution. Moreover, they downed an Israeli spy balloon hovering over Adamit in northern Israel, shooting it down after identifying its control centre in Israel. These attacks have escalated since the Israeli offensive in Rafag, despite warnings.

Hezbollah has shot down an IDF observation balloon into Lebanon, raising concerns about the possibility of a full-scale war if operations in Rafah continue. The incident follows Hezbollah's announcement of downing the Israeli spy balloon, claiming it was monitoring its movements over Adamit in northern Israel along the Lebanon border. The group asserts that the balloon's base and control centre were destroyed during the attack, with casualties among the operators. Israeli media has confirmed the balloon was shot down and fell in Lebanese territory. Tensions persist along the border, with Hezbollah engaging in clashes with Israel in recent months, particularly since the start of Israeli Rafah operations, during which the Iran-backed group has used drones against IDF forces. The situation remains tense, with casualties reported on both sides of the border.
