Government 'not contemplating' early election over Rwanda plan, says Gove
Sunday, 10 December 2023 The government is "not contemplating" an early general election because ministers are "confident" the Rwanda bill will be approved by MPs, Michael Gove has told Sky News.
Michael Gove says allegations Conservative candidates carried out bets on the date of the general election are "far from ideal" and "deeply regrettable". The housing secretary adds that he hopes "in the fullness of time people find forgiveness". Report by Brooksl. Michael Gove says, "you've got to believe you can win", the general election, even if the chances are "slimmer". The levelling-up secretary adds Labour's leadership has driven Birmingham City Council "to the brink of bankrupcy" and is a "test case of the difference between Conservative and Labour policies". Sir Ed Davey has reacted to the news that Michael Gove has stood down as an MP ahead of the election, saying: "It's very interesting that a lot of senior Tories in seats that we think we can win are standing down. I think they've seen both the local election results where we're doing really well in those areas and they're seeing the fact that lots of former Conservatives are switching to the Liberal Democrats."
