Narasimha Rao believed Vijaya Raje Scindia's assurance on Babri against ministers' advice: Sharad Pawar
Tuesday, 8 August 2023 Defence minister Sharad Pawar has revealed that former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao believed in assurances from Vijaya Raje Scindia that nothing would happen to the Babri Masjid during the Ram Janambhoomi movement in 1992. This statement was made during the launch of journalist Neerja Chowdhury’s book, 'How Prime Ministers Decide'. Pawar added that Rao was advised against this belief by his minister colleagues as he was convinced that nothing wrong would occur.

In a landmark decision, a seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court ruled that lawmakers, comprising both Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), can be prosecuted under the Prevention of Corruption Act if they accept monetary gains in exchange for their votes or speeches in Parliament or state assemblies. This ruling overturns the previous 1998 judgement of the apex court in the PV Narasimha Rao case.
