The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the northeast monsoon rainfall is expected to begin in the southern peninsular region within the next 72 hours. However, the initial phase of the monsoon is expected to be weak. The IMD had previously predicted normal rainfall for the winter monsoon in Peninsular India from October to December. The southwest monsoon, which normally ends on October 15, completely withdrew from the country four days later this year. The summer monsoon this year reported below normal rainfall due to El Nino conditions.
