No new liability under Bharatmala till fresh cabinet approval, road ministry to NH agencies
Thursday, 23 November 2023 The approval and bidding of highway projects under the Bharatmala programme have been halted until fresh Cabinet approval is obtained. The finance ministry has instructed the road transport and highways ministry to not create any new liabilities before obtaining approval for the revised cost. This has created uncertainty regarding the development of approximately 8,000 km of NH stretches. The cost of the Bharatmala programme has doubled to Rs 10.6 lakh crore, but the revised cost has not yet been approved as inter-ministerial discussions are ongoing.
