Assam's problem real but just can't junk provision in Citizenship Act: Supreme Court

IndiaTimes Tuesday, 5 December 2023
The Supreme Court, in a hearing regarding Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, agreed that infiltration from Bangladesh has caused problems for the original inhabitants of Assam. However, the court stated that the risk of being outnumbered cannot be the sole basis for declaring the section unconstitutional. The court also requested data on the beneficiaries of Section 6A and emphasized the lack of evidence indicating that granting citizenship to Bangladeshi immigrants impacted the demographic and cultural identity of Assam.
