No retrospective effect of benami deal law, says HC
The Bombay HC quashed a 2021 complaint and court summons against NCP leader and minister Chhagan Bhujbal, his son Pankaj and nephew Sameer Bhujbal regarding alleged benami assets held by three companies. The I-T department had invoked a law meant to curb benami transactions alleging properties including one in Mumbai and sugar mills in Nashik were held through a maze of holdings for the Bhujbals. The complaint alleged the Bhujbals were beneficiaries of alleged benami transactions carried out in 2008-09 and 2010-11. There is a review petition pending before the Supreme Court in the matter.
