Menstruation not handicap, no need for paid leave: Smriti Irani
Wednesday, 13 December 2023 Union minister Smriti Irani, in response to a question in Rajya Sabha, emphasized that menstruation is a natural part of a woman's life and not a handicap. She stated that women should not be denied equal opportunities based on someone else's viewpoint. When asked about measures for granting paid menstrual leave, Irani mentioned that there is no current proposal to make it mandatory for all workplaces. She also highlighted the need to create an environment that promotes menstrual hygiene and educate men and boys.
On December 13, Union Minister Smriti Irani silenced RJD MP Manoj Jha in the Rajya Sabha over the topic of menstrual leave. Following their discussion, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar humorously suggested that the RJD MP might need a cough syrup for his throat.
