Thursday, 14 December 2023 Gaddam Prasad Kumar, a senior Congress functionary, is set to become the first dalit speaker of the Telangana legislative assembly. His election as speaker is almost unanimous, with support from the BRS, AIMIM, and CPI. The BJP legislators did not participate in the nomination filing. Prasad Kumar, a former minister in the Congress government, will be the third speaker of the Telangana assembly. The last SC community MLA to occupy the Speaker's chair was K Pratibha Bharathi in united Andhra Pradesh, almost 20 years ago.
