Lok Sabha passes 3 criminal justice bills to replace Raj-era laws

IndiaTimes Wednesday, 20 December 2023
Lok Sabha has passed the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, replacing the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act, respectively. The bills are set to be passed by Rajya Sabha, clearing the way for significant reframing of the criminal justice system. Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the laws reflect a transition from punishing intent to delivering equitable justice and mark progress in the government's de-colonisation project.
