NGT imposes fines of over Rs 79,000 crore on states and UTs for different violations in 2022-23
Thursday, 21 December 2023 The government informed the Rajya Sabha that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed fines on states and Union Territories (UTs) for non-compliance of municipal solid waste management (SWM) rules and other environmental violations. Tamil Nadu faced the highest fine, followed by Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Telangana, West Bengal, Karnataka, Delhi, and Rajasthan. The SWM Rules, 2016 provide the statutory framework for solid waste management. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) monitors water quality at thousands of locations and ambient air quality at numerous stations across the country.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted ongoing efforts to normalize the situation in Manipur, citing over 11,000 FIRs registered and 500 arrests made. He noted a reduction in violence, with schools, colleges, and offices reopening. Modi emphasized continued dialogue with stakeholders and the Home Minister's extended stay in the region. He mentioned central government support for flood relief and warned against attempts to escalate tensions. Modi also criticized Congress for imposing President's rule in Manipur ten times in the past.

In a devastating road accident today, at least 18 people lost their lives and many others were injured after the bus they were travelling in collided with another vehicle in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. Among the deceased were three women and one child, police reported.
