Parliament clears bill for appointment of CEC, ECs

Parliament passed a bill allowing the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners by a panel consisting of the Prime Minister, leader of the opposition or largest party in the Lok Sabha, and a minister nominated by the PM. The bill covers areas left out in previous legislation and aims to ensure the independence of the EC. The presence of the Chief Justice of India in the committee was questioned, but the law minister clarified that the government was following the Supreme Court's instructions and that the PM's involvement is necessary.
