WHO: Boost surveillance, Covid protective measures

IndiaTimes Sunday, 24 December 2023
The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged countries in the South-East Asia Region (SEARO), including India, to enhance surveillance and implement protective measures due to a surge in respiratory diseases, including Covid-19 and its new sub-variant JN.1, along with influenza. The advisory is particularly relevant as India has witnessed 656 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total active cases to 3,742, with a death toll of 5,33,333. Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO South-East Asia regional director, emphasized the need for strengthened surveillance, sequencing, and data sharing to monitor the evolving nature of the viruses.

Kuwait Building Fire: Three Arrests Made By Kuwaiti Authorities In The Tragic Fire Incident

Kuwaiti authorities have detained three individuals on suspicion of manslaughter following a devastating fire that killed dozens of Indian migrant workers and plunged their families and friends into mourning. The blaze, which broke out around dawn on Wednesday in the Mangaf area, also claimed the lives of three Filipinos among the 50 dead, according to officials in Manila. The six-storey building, heavily populated with migrant labourers, was engulfed in black smoke as the fire swept through the ground floor. Most of Kuwait's population of over four million comprises foreigners, many from South and Southeast Asia working in construction and service industries. ~HT.97~PR.152~ED.194~
