3.6 lakh shops penalised since 2021 for selling tobacco near schools
Monday, 15 January 2024 Close to 3.6 lakh shops nationwide have faced action since March 2021 - ranging from challans to relocation - for selling cigarettes and tobacco within 100 metres of schools and educational institutions. Also as many as 1,057 FIRs have been registered under the Juvenile Justice Act for selling liquor, narcotics and psychotrpic drugs to children or engaging children in sale of such substances. Kerala has registered the maximum cases followed by Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Polling in 102 parliamentary seats across 21 states and Union Territories in the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections commenced at 7 am on April 19 and ended at 6 pm. Over 102 parliamentary constituencies in 21 states and union territories headed to the polling booth on Friday, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. West Bengal recorded the highest turnout till 5 PM at 77.57 per cent, followed by Tripura at 76.10 per cent. Voter turnout in Assam stood at 70.77 per cent, while Manipur recorded a voter turnout of 68.58 per cent till 5 PM.
