PMO lauds Archbishop Koovakad’s elevation as cardinal: ‘Immense pride for India’
Saturday, 7 December 2024 Archbishop George Koovakad of India was elevated to Cardinal by Pope Francis in a Vatican City ceremony. The Indian government sent a delegation to witness the historic event. Koovakad, 51, joins 20 other new Cardinals and becomes the sixth Indian Cardinal. His extensive diplomatic service and role in organizing papal travels were highlighted.
Pope Francis, who passed away at age 88, will be laid to rest this Saturday at St. Peter’s Square, Rome. Tens of thousands of mourners, including 170 foreign delegations and top global leaders like Trump, Macron, Zelenskyy, and Prince William, will attend. The funeral, led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, follows a week of tributes from over 130,000 people. Security will be unprecedented with fighter jets, anti-drone systems, and 2,000 officers deployed. In keeping with his humble nature, Francis requested a simple wooden coffin and burial outside the Vatican.

China’s state-sanctioned Catholic church has branded Pope Francis a “Western stooge” and criticized Vatican–Beijing agreements as threats to national sovereignty. Underground congregations are now pressing for unity despite strict party surveillance, while hardline officials accuse the late pontiff of meddling in Chinese religious policy. Human rights groups condemn the broader crackdown on Christians, even as experts like Michel Chambon praise Francis’s diplomatic reset with Beijing. With the next papal selection looming, Chinese Catholics face a pivotal choice between state control and underground solidarity.
