Along with an expansion of Heathrow Airport, the chancellor announced the government’s backing for housing, transport and other investment in the Oxford-Cambridge corridor, which she said could become “Europe’s Silicon Valley” and add £78 billion to the UK’s economy by 2035. Sir Keir Starmer has chatted with schoolchildren in Kyiv on his first visit to the country since he became prime minister in July. On the visit he met his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy to sign a new agreement which sets out co-operation between the countries that will stretch into the next century. One pupil asked Starmer to reveal his favourite football player, to which the Arsenal fan replied that it was Martin Ødegaard and that his "all-time favourite Arsenal player is Thierry Henry". Mourners arrived for the funeral of Man United player Denis Law on Tuesday. The Aberdeen-born striker died on 17 January 2025, aged 84, more than three years after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Callum Best and Alex Ferguson were amongst the big names seen arriving at Manchester Cathedral for the funeral service.
