Thousands of remote IT workers sent wages to N Korea to help fund weapons program, FBI says
Friday, 20 October 2023 Thousands of IT workers contracted by US companies have been secretly sending millions of dollars of their wages to North Korea for its ballistic missile program, according to FBI and Department of Justice officials. The workers used false identities to obtain jobs and funneled the money they earned to North Korea. The scheme is so prevalent that companies must be extra vigilant in verifying the identities of their remote IT workers, the FBI advised. North Korea's use of IT freelancers to fund its weapons program has been ongoing for over a decade.
