Polish parliament taps Tusk to form next government
Monday, 11 December 2023
Former EU chief Donald Tusk has been chosen by Polish lawmakers to form the next government, marking a significant shift in policy following eight years of right-wing populist rule. Tusk, who previously served as prime minister, received 248 votes in favour and 201 against. The conservative camp's proposed new cabinet was rejected. Tusk's pro-EU alliance, joined by two smaller opposition groups, secured a majority in parliament. The new government aims to mend strained ties with the EU, unblock frozen EU aid, and restore Poland's credibility in the international arena.
