At least 11 killed after cyclone in French territory of Mayotte
Sunday, 15 December 2024 () At least 11 people have died after a cyclone hit the French territory of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean - as officials said the number of those killed "will be high".
Chido brought winds in excess of 220 kph, according to the French weather service, ripping roofs off houses in the archipelago which has a population of just over 300,000 and lies around 800km off Mozambique.
French authorities said more than 800 more personnel were expected to arrive in the coming days as rescuers comb through the devastation caused by Chido when it hit the densely populated archipelago of around 300,000 people on Saturday.
