Trump lashes out at big tech

U.S. President Donald Trump, in his first remarks before the press since Dec.

8, slammed big tech companies Tuesday, saying they were doing a “horrible thing” to the country.

Fred Katayama reports.

U.S. President Donald Trump blasted big tech companies Tuesday after their unprecedented crackdown on conspiracy theorists and fringe groups in an urgent effort to prevent more unrest - including silencing the president himself.

In his first remarks to the press since the attack on the capitol, Trump said “big tech” is doing a “horrible thing.” “I think big tech has made a terrible mistake and very very bad for our country and that's leading others to do the same thing, and it causes a lot of problems and a lot of danger.

Big mistake, they shouldn't be doing it, but there's always a countermove when they do that.

I've never seen such anger as I see right now and that's a terrible thing terrible thing.” His remarks came after online platforms and social media companies further clamped down on Monday.

PayPal has blocked GiveSendGo, a Christian crowdfunding site that had helped raise funds for people who attended last week’s rally in

Class="kln">Washington when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol.

Amazon and Twitter went after Qanon, the group that has pushed conspiracies on social media … such as the baseless claim that Trump is secretly fighting a cabal of child-sex predators.

Amazon said it’s working to remove some Qanon products from its online marketplace.

The retailer’s policies prohibit offensive items or other inappropriate content.

Twitter said it had suspended more than 70,000 accounts since Friday that were primarily dedicated to sharing QAnon content, citing an “increased risk of harm.” Meanwhile, Airbnb will now ban users who were involved in criminal activity in storming the Capitol.

The online home rental firm also said it’ll cancel reservations if it confirms guests are associated with a hate group.

The latest moves follow a flurry of measures taken by tech giants beginning last week when Twitter permanently suspended Trump’s personal account.

Facebook, Google,

Class="kln">Apple and Amazon have also taken their strongest actions against Trump to limit his reach.

Speaking during the Reuters Next conference, Facebook’s operations chief Sheryl Sandberg said the world’s largest social network had no plans to lift its block on Trump’s accounts.

Supreme Court Rules That Some Jan. 6 Defendants Were Improperly Charged

Supreme Court Rules That , Some Jan. 6 Defendants, Were Improperly Charged. NPR reports that the United States Supreme Court voted to limit which defendants accused of taking part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot can be charged by federal prosecutors. The decision also casts doubt on two out of the four felony counts in former President Donald Trump's election subversion indictment. According to conservative Chief Justice John Roberts, the court ruled that the U.S. government must prove , “that the defendant impaired the availability or integrity for use in an official proceeding of records, documents, objects, or other things used in an official proceeding.”. NPR reports that prosecutors relied on a key criminal statute to prosecute over 350 participants of the Capitol riot. The statute makes it a crime to alter or destroy official documents, or to otherwise obstruct or impede official proceedings. Roberts wrote that the statute was not meant to broaden the meaning of the law to make it a catchall provision. . The decision will impact other cases related to Jan. 6, many of which will have to be resentenced, retried or defendants will be released. . NYU law professor Ryan Goodman authored a study that found only 346 of the 1,417 people charged in connection with the Capitol riot were charged under the obstruction statute. The study also found that 71 people are still awaiting trial on the obstruction charge, but over half of them are also charged with another felony. NPR points out that if found guilty of other felony charges, the sentencing judge is still allowed to use the charge of obstruction to determine the length of their sentence.
