COVID-19 sharpened world's awareness on global interdependence: India at UNSC
Speaking at UNSC high-level meeting on Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Upholding Multilateralism and the United Nations-centred International System, India's Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said that the COVID-19 pandemic sharpened world's awareness of depth of global interdependence, later he stressed that world remain resilient to the pandemic as resilient as least resilient country.
"COVID-19 sharpened our awareness of depth of global interdependence and on fact that world's only as resilient as least resilient country.
Events of past year demonstrated how imperative it's for countries to coordinate responses to challenges that pandemic brought to fore," Foreign Secretary Shringla.
The Gaza Civil Defense has reported the loss of 79 aid workers since the onset of the Israeli offensive in early October, with the latest casualty occurring after an Israeli strike on a humanitarian safe zone at the al-Mawasi camp, which killed at least 90 Palestinians and wounded 300. This attack is considered the deadliest in weeks. The conflict escalated on October 7 following a surprise operation by Hamas, leading Israel to launch a full-scale war on Gaza and enforce a near-total siege, severely restricting essential supplies. The offensive has resulted in at least 38,664 Palestinian deaths and 89,097 injuries, worsening the humanitarian crisis. Limited access to food, medicine, and water has intensified civilian suffering and complicated rescue efforts. Despite international calls for ceasefires and aid, efforts at the UN Security Council to address the conflict have been hindered by vetoes, highlighting the urgent need for resolution.
