Sir Keir Starmer has held a meeting with the Emir of Qatar in 10 Downing Street, on the final day of his state visit to the UK. The prime minister hailed the "strong partnership" between the two countries and the Emir paid tribute to the "great relationship we have together". A major incident has been declared in Greater Manchester after severe rainfall on New Year’s Day caused widespread flooding. Homes have been evacuated, train lines and roads have closed, and a canal has collapsed following heavy rain. The number of patients being diagnosed with cancer at an early stage in England has reached a record high. Nearly three in five patients are being diagnosed at stages one and two, when the cancer is easier to treat. Pressures on the NHS however, mean targets for starting treatment are still not where they'd like them to be, said Professor Peter Johnson, Clinical director for cancer, NHS England.

A major clean-up operation is under way in parts of Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire after heavy rainfall overnight into New Year's Day.
