WATCH: Military and police in Ecuador raid prisons after week of unprecedented violence
The police and military operation came a day after President Daniel Noboa and the official body that controls the prisons announced the release of nearly 170 prison officers and administrative staff who had been held by inmates for six days.
In Ecuador, courts are due to rule in landmark cases of labour exploitation and slavery. Agricultural workers say they suffered decades of abuse on plantations producing plant fibre for Japanese company Furukawa, who's representatives could face jail time.
