The chimes of Big Ben and a spectacular fireworks display at the London Eye went ahead, despite concerns about adverse weather conditions – which had led authorities to cancel the traditional Hogmanay celebration in Edinburgh.

The shadow health secretary has urged Wes Streeting to speed up the process for social care reforms.
