Govt backs Heathrow expansion to boost economic growth
The Government will back a third runway at Heathrow Airport as it looks to go “further and faster” on growth, the chancellor has announced.
In a speech in Oxfordshire on growth, Rachel Reeves said the west London airport’s expansion is “badly needed” because “for decades its growth has been constrained”.
Reeves stated that a third runway could increase potential GDP by 0.43% by 2050 and create more than 100,000 jobs.
Heathrow’s plan to build a third runway received parliamentary approval in June 2018, but has been delayed by legal challenges and the coronavirus pandemic.

As the deadline to prevent a government shutdown rapidly approaches, former President Donald Trump has dismissed a bipartisan agreement between Republicans and Democrats. Trump pushed for a controversial new deal that includes a three-month government funding extension and a two-year suspension of the debt ceiling, a proposal that was swiftly rejected by the House of Representatives. With crucial public services and federal workers at risk, Congress must act fast to avoid a shutdown. Will lawmakers come together in time to avert this crisis just days before Christmas?

The shadow chancellor has argued that Rachel Reeves's plan to expand Heathrow Airport doesn't do enough to tackle economic issues affecting people now, claiming it will only come into effect in the next 10-30 years, if at all. Mel Stride did, however, assert his support for Reeves's planned Heathrow expansion, despite citing Labour divisions about the issue including Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan's objections.
