After fresh fighting, over 5k from Myanmar take refuge in Mizoram
Monday, 13 November 2023 A group of 39 Myanmarese soldiers and around 5,000 civilians have sought refuge in villages in Mizoram's Champhai district following renewed fighting between militia groups and junta-backed forces. The refugees will be housed in existing camps, with 21 of them carrying injuries. The soldiers surrendered their arms after fleeing the overrun Khawmawi army camp. This influx adds to the already large number of Myanmarese refugees in Mizoram, where over 40,000 people have sought shelter since February 2021. The home ministry has been notified of the situation.
Polling in 102 parliamentary seats across 21 states and Union Territories in the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections commenced at 7 am on April 19 and ended at 6 pm. Over 102 parliamentary constituencies in 21 states and union territories headed to the polling booth on Friday, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. West Bengal recorded the highest turnout till 5 PM at 77.57 per cent, followed by Tripura at 76.10 per cent. Voter turnout in Assam stood at 70.77 per cent, while Manipur recorded a voter turnout of 68.58 per cent till 5 PM.
