6 major legislations get Parliament approval as winter session ends

IndiaTimes Friday, 22 December 2023
Bringing an end to the tumultuous winter session, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned sine die a day ahead of schedule. The session was marked by a major security breach, a record number of MP suspensions, and protests. Rajya Sabha approved three bills to overhaul India's criminal justice system, while Lok Sabha passed a bill on the appointment of the CEC and ECs. Additionally, a bill allowing the government to temporarily take over telecom services in the interest of national security was also passed. The total number of suspended members increased to 146, including the expulsion of TMC Lok Sabha member Mahua Moitra. Parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi moved a motion to suspend three Congress MPs, and opposition parties demanded a statement from home minister Amit Shah on the security breach.
