As Covid-19 cases rise, WHO asks countries to strengthen surveillance

IndiaTimes Sunday, 24 December 2023
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged countries in South-East Asia to strengthen surveillance for respiratory diseases, including Covid-19 and its new sub-variant JN.1. WHO classifies JN.1 as a variant of interest due to its rapid global spread. The public health risk posed by JN.1 is currently evaluated as low. People are advised to take protective measures and seek clinical care when unwell. Vaccination against Covid-19 and influenza is crucial, especially for high-risk individuals. Countries must strengthen surveillance and reporting to effectively manage respiratory diseases.

Kuwait Building Fire: Three Arrests Made By Kuwaiti Authorities In The Tragic Fire Incident

Kuwaiti authorities have detained three individuals on suspicion of manslaughter following a devastating fire that killed dozens of Indian migrant workers and plunged their families and friends into mourning. The blaze, which broke out around dawn on Wednesday in the Mangaf area, also claimed the lives of three Filipinos among the 50 dead, according to officials in Manila. The six-storey building, heavily populated with migrant labourers, was engulfed in black smoke as the fire swept through the ground floor. Most of Kuwait's population of over four million comprises foreigners, many from South and Southeast Asia working in construction and service industries. ~HT.97~PR.152~ED.194~
