Streeting: Labour can offer light at end of tunnel for NHS
The shadow health secretary has said only a Labour government can secure the future of the NHS, as the health service celebrates its 75th anniversary against the backdrop of major industrial action.
Wes Streeting said: “We’ve got a plan not just for recruiting staff but retaining them … and giving people, whether they work for the NHS or they use the NHS, some hope and light and the end of the tunnel that the NHS … can be there, free at the point of use ... for the next 75 years." The health secretary has vowed to end "two-tier healthcare" in the NHS in a speech delivered at the Labour conference. Wes Streeting said the NHS has let people down in recent years. The health secretary has defended the government's decision to cut the winter fuel payment for pensioners amid increasing backlash. Wes Streeting insisted pensioners will still be better off under a Labour government because they are "protecting the triple lock". "Because of the choices we've made, whether it's protecting the poorest pensioners by keeping their winter fuel allowance or indeed protecting the triple lock for all pensioners, all pensioners will be better off this winter than they were last winter," he said. The Met Office has upgraded its yellow weather warning to an amber 'be prepared' rainfall warning as showers are forecast to be heavier that expected.
Areas affected by the amber warning include Milton Keynes, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, Leicestershire, parts of south-west England and the West Midlands, which could see 30-40 mm of rainfall within three hours.
