Cabinet minister Darren Jones says he has “every confidence” that Lord Peter Mandelson's appointment as UK ambassador to the US will be approved by Donald Trump's team. There were reports in a number of newspapers on Sunday that the Trump administration could be considering not granting approval to Lord Mandelson's new position. The chief secretary to the Treasury also distances the government from comments made by Sir Sadiq Khan where the Mayor of London warned over 'resurgent fascism' ahead of Trump’s inauguration. The chief secretary to the Treasury has hailed an unexpected dip in inflation, but admits that the cost of living "is still a pressure for families across the country and there's more work to do". Darren Jones adds the latest Office for National Statistics figures, "shows that the prime minister's plan for change is working". Inflation has fallen to 2.5% in December from 2.6% in November, which will come as a relief to Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who has faced criticism given rising government borrowing costs and a slump in the value of the pound. The latest figures could open the door for an interest rate cut next month. Report by Brooksl. Like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/itn and follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/itn
Darren Jones says Tulip Siddiq's resignation from the government can be seen as a "clear success" for Sir Keir Starmer, as it shows the prime minister's new independent process for investigating ministerial conduct "has worked". The chief secretary to the Treasury adds Siddiq "was a good minister doing a great job", but that she accepted her wider family had become a "distraction" for the government. Siddiq resigned as Treasury minister over an anti-corruption investigation into her wider family in Bangladesh. Report by Brooksl. Senior Tory MP Sir David Davis has said that "new medical evidence" analysed by a medical expert panel could provide a "completely alternative explanation" for the death of seven babies. This comes as retired medic Dr Shoo Lee, who co-authored a 1989 academic paper on air embolism in babies – which featured prominently in Lucy Letby’s 10-month trial, chaired a panel of 14 experts who compiled an “impartial evidence-based report”, which casts doubt on some of the medical evidence used in the trial.

Dr Shoo Lee, neonatal expert, and Mark McDonald, barrister, speaking at a presser presenting new evidence from neonatal experts which has casted doubt on some of Lucy Letby's convictions for murder and attempted murder. Dr Lee has said there was no medical evidence of murder and that the medical evidence used to convict her was wrong. Mr McDonald followed this up saying that if the evidence used to convict Letby was indeed incorrect, her conviction is "unsafe" and "no crime was committed".
