On Monday morning, a collision between the Kanchenjunga Express passenger train and a goods train in Darjeeling, West Bengal, resulted in eight deaths and 25 injuries.
The incident occurred around 9 am when the goods train overshot a signal and struck the rear of the Kanchenjunga Express, causing the derailment.
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) CPRO Sabyasachi De confirmed the injuries were non-fatal, and rescue operations are ongoing.
Senior officials have arrived at the site, and efforts are being made to complete the rescue swiftly.
Local ambulances and rescue teams, including the Railway Protection Force (RPF), are assisting at the scene.
Authorities have set up a control desk at Rangapani station to manage the situation and provided helpline numbers for families.
Both Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed condolences, and President Droupadi Murmu extended her sympathies and prayers for the victims and their families.
Following the Kanchenjunga Express train accident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticised the Railway Ministry for neglecting passenger amenities and the well-being of railway employees, including officials, engineers, technical staff, and workers. She highlighted that their old pension has been withdrawn and accused the government of focusing more on elections and manipulation rather than governance. Congress leader Pawan Khera also condemned the government, pointing out the recurring nature of such tragic incidents and accusing the ministry of not learning from past mistakes. He criticised the ministers for visiting the incident site primarily for publicity and emphasised that in the past, leaders from his party would resign after such accidents, setting a standard of accountability.
