Bihar govt issues gazette notifications for raising quota from 50 to 65 per cent
Tuesday, 21 November 2023 The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar has raised the quota for deprived castes from 50% to 65% in state government jobs and educational institutions. The bills seeking this increase were recently cleared by the state legislature. The new quota includes a hike for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, extremely backward castes, and other backward classes. The total quantum of reservation will now be 75% in the state, including the existing 10% quota for economically weaker sections. The Governor's assent was received shortly after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed hope for its approval.
Police resorted to cane charge and used water cannons during a protest demonstration by the Youth Congress Bihar outside the legislative council in Patna on Wednesday. The workers held a protest demonstration demanding action from chief minister Nitish Kumar over issues including rising prices, rampant crime, and unemployment in the state. According to SDM Patna Shrikant Khandekar, the protest was held without permission from the administration and escalated when demonstrators broke barricades and attacked police personnel with lathis.
