Bilkis Bano case: Why Supreme Court quashed Gujarat’s remission of convicts
The Supreme Court overturned the Gujarat government's decision to grant early release to 11 convicts in the 2002 gang-rape of Bilkis Bano and murder of seven of her family members. The court determined that Gujarat lacked the authority to rule on the remission matter. The convicts were tried in Maharashtra, so only the Maharashtra government has the authority to consider their pleas for remission. The court criticized Radhyesham for deceiving the court and obtaining a favorable ruling.
