Back to the future: Cameron returns to front-bench politics
David Cameron's shock appointment as foreign secretary on Monday marks the first time that a former prime minister has returned to the Cabinet since Sir Alec Douglas-Home was also appointed foreign secretary in 1970.
Seven and a half years on from losing the Brexit referendum, and subsequent resignation from Downing Street and the House of Commons, we look at the journey the now-Lord Cameron has taken back to front-bench politics.

Lord David Cameron says Rishi Sunak has "every day" announced "exciting policies for the future", adding the prime minister has shown "lots of energy" throughout the election campaign. Shadow Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds denies the Labour Party of 2024 looks like the Conservative Party under David Cameron's leadership. When asked whether the two parties are similar Reynolds says, “I really disagree on that”. He continues saying, “A Labour platform which is pro-business and pro-worker is about better living standards, better public services, it's about breaking out of the stagnation of the last 14 years.”

The Foreign Secretary has called for a “rapid” investigation into Israeli airstrikes in the southern Gaza city of Rafah over the weekend. Lord Cameron said "the Israelis have already said it was a tragic mistake, but we want to see that properly investigated."

Gareth Southgate has resigned as manager of the England men’s national football team after almost eight years at the helm. It comes just two days after England’s defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024. Despite that disappointment, Southgate has taken the Three Lions to two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final during his time in charge. Prince William, President of the Football Association (FA), tweeted his thanks to Southgate for his leadership.
